Commissioner’s Corner

Big news first! Get ready. Get set. Get Varsity!

That’s right, our first Varsity breakout is scheduled for February’s roundtable.  If you are part of a Varsity team, a leader in a Varsity team, have oversight over a Varsity team, or want to know more about what a Varsity team is, then this is where you should be next Thursday night!  We’re talking to everybody associated with a Varsity team, boys and adults.  Steve Anderson, our newly minted Varsity trainer, will discuss what the Varsity program is, changes to the training program, and let you know how and where Varsity training will happen.  We’ll also be looking for ideas for district and multi-district Varsity activities–and you won’t believe the things that Varsity teams get to do!  Don’t tell anyone, though, or else everybody will want to be a Varsity.  Well, OK, I guess we’ll let everybody join a team, so go ahead and spread the word!

How many essentials do you have in your pack?  Come learn how the 10 essentials have changed over time, and see what Air Force survival trainer Gene Ward taught that you should never leave home without.  This is part one of a two-part review of what you should have with you whenever you’re more than ten feet away from your mom.  And remember, anyone who attends both months will have their name in a drawing to win the essentials we’re going to discuss.  You don’t want to miss either month, unless you’re a Varsity leader having fun in the other room.  That means that you need to have your scout leaders and your Varsity leaders all come to Roundtable!  Venturing leaders can join with the scouting or Varsity breakout until we get your specific breakouts rolling along too.  Watch for more information on that soon.

Cub Scouts

Cub program updates are here!  In addition to your regularly scheduled Cub Scout Roundtable breakout, be ready to discuss the changes to the Cub Program.  You really don’t want to miss this if you work with Cub Scouts!  In addition, if you are responsible for Cub training or Roundtable, please see the attached flyer about training this Saturday on the changes.

Training Opportunities

I have included the Willamette District 2015 training calendar, as well as specifics on the February and March training sessions.  Remember, all Cub Scout leaders who interact directly with boys must have their leader specific training in order to recharter this year.  So make sure every leader in your unit is trained early in the year!  It’s only one day, and it’s for the scouts, so quit whining and get trained.  I mean, the value to our youth gained by having fully trained leaders is inestimable, while the commitment required by those being trained is minor at worst; therefore, calculation of a cost-benefit ratio…oh, just quit whining and get trained.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or needs, please feel free to contact me any time.  See you Thursday, February 12 at 7:00 PM at the LDS building on 45th.  If you talk to anyone who should know all this but obviously didn’t get this e-mail, they must not be on our mailing list.  Please forward this message to them, and have them forward their e-mail address to me so that we can add them to the distribution list.
